As a service writer I do rely on parts from all sources, local parts for the frugal Caravan owners, the Internet for our older and more unique cars and of course the dealership. That's where the problem lies, dealer parts supplies have damn near dried up due to a shipping and logistics company that went bust last week.
So what's the deal?
This company that operates at the port in Newark that took these orders in, manages inventory and ships them to their respective New York tri state dealerships for several big marques such as Toyota, BMW, Nissan and Fiat/Chrysler. Dealers are now forced to use their own manpower and vehicles to pick these parts up, but the situation hasn't gotten better. I can't see this being helpful when shipping large items like driveline components. At this point I've had an easier time sourcing parts for my older Saabs.
Not in New York? How can it possibly affect you?
I attempted to order a dealer only part for a Matrix today only for a customer on a time frame. The parts department told me they couldn't even check inventory at that point, and when I suggested the idea of calling a dealer out west he laughed and told me he's tried the same and had given up after calling as far as Cincinnati. I thanked him for the info and told my customer. If this isn't resolved soon I think it will continually strain the parts supplies beyond Newark.

Parts Manager here, I feel your pain.
Ordered a differential for a customer's MX5, and had a release date of two weeks out. The DAY BEFORE it was to be released to us, someone else ordered it critical, and in doing so was able to procure OUR part, now we're looking at a 3-6 week backorder.
And of course Mazda is just like "Well, why didn't YOU order it critical??"
The car is out of manufacturer warranty so they're not helping, and it wasn't ordered critical because the customer was okay waiting two weeks, and not paying extra for the critical order shipping charge.
